“That’s just your opinion.”
-_________________________________________________________________-
This has happened so many times with so many people. I understand it if non-Christians say that. They have no reason not to. I 100% agree with them saying that, because for them, it’s 100% true, and not just a deflection to avoid what I’m saying because it happens to be challenging or uncomfortable.
But Christians? Really?
As if there is no standard of truth. As if it really is all just opinion and there’s no such thing as absolute. Such BS. “Well let’s all just agree that Jesus is Lord and that’s all we need.” Seriously, this has been said to me more times than I can count even by people I look up to and respect. Okay, Westboro Baptist Church (the “God Hates Fags” ‘church’) claims that Jesus is Lord. Does that mean we’re all on the same page? Because they put one little bullet point in the “Statement of Faith” section of their website? Does that AT ALL mean they’re actually furthering the Kingdom of God and living as though Jesus said His followers would? I’m sorry, but…wait, no, I’m not sorry. You can throw that neutralizing disclaimer around, but at the end of the day, if what “Jesus is Lord” means to you is that He came and died to show you how unworthy you are, to give you a set of standards to try really hard to live up to, and as a Get Out Of Hell Free Card, then the “Jesus” you claim as your Lord is not the Jesus of the Scriptures or the Jesus that died to completely and utterly set. you. free.
There is a standard of truth. There is a standard of love and peace. His name is Jesus. He’s not just a name we throw around as an excuse to stop arguing because we want things to be all smooth and nice. He’s actually a Person. Coming together and putting our differences aside in His name isn’t about “agreeing to disagree”. In fact, that mindset is missing the point completely. Coming together means we don’t allow deception in each other, because all we see is perfection in one another. When we all see nothing but goodness in our brothers and sisters totally regardless of doctrines good or bad, THAT is contentment in our unity as His Body.
If you’re pissed, that’s fine. But at least talk to me about it :)
